Protocol for Symptomatic Individuals

Updated 7/1/2022

If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and live in MBL housing:

  1. Immediately disengage from activities, begin wearing a mask (if you are not already doing so) and return to your room/residence.
  2. Contact the MBL’s Human Resources department at covid@mbl.edu and inform them that you are symptomatic.
    • You can expect to receive a response from HR within one hour on Monday through Friday between 8am and 8 pm and within four hours on weekends and holidays.
  3. Take a COVID-19 rapid test.
    • For Advanced Training Course Participants, test kits are provided by your Course Director(s). If you have questions on rapid antigen tests contact cgherst@mbl.edu.
    • For Whitman Fellows, test kits are provided by the Division of Research upon request. If you have questions on rapid antigen tests, contact Anne Sylvester at asylvester@mbl.edu or Briana Bertochi at bbertochi@mbl.edu.
      • For Whitman Scientists who are symptomatic and living on-campus only: if you don’t have your own test kits, a rapid antigen test may be available by contacting Anne Sylvester at asylvester@mbl.edu or Briana Bertochi at bbertochi@mbl.edu.
    • For Grass Fellows, test kits are provided by the Division of Research upon request. If you have questions on rapid antigen tests, contact Elva Diaz (ediaz@ucdavis.edu) and Laura Cocas (lcocas@scu.edu).
    • For Undergraduates in the undergraduate houses on campus, tests are available from your Residence Advisors or by contacting Jean Enright at jenright@mbl.edu.
    • Test kits are provided only to MBL program participants. MBL strives to keep a robust supply of tests, but occasional supply chain issues may limit availability from time-to-time. Program Participants are responsible for getting COVID tests for their visitors or family members.
  4. Rapid Antigen Test Results
    • If you test positive during business hours (until 8 pm), then contact MBL HR (covid@mbl.edu) to inform them of the result and they will provide you with information on what to expect next in terms of contact tracing, further testing, and potential housing changes required for isolation housing. See the MBL’s COVID Positive Protocol for required procedures once an individual tests positive for COVID-19.
    • If you test positive during non-business hours (after 8 pm – 8 am) and you have a roommate, then contact MBL security at 508-289-7217 and inform them that you need to be moved to isolation housing. See the MBL’s COVID Positive Protocol for required procedures once an individual tests positive for COVID-19.
    • If you test negative and symptoms persist, then remain in your room and you will be moved to isolation housing and you will be asked to take another rapid test in 24 hours. If you test negative again after two rapid antigen tests, then contact the MBL’s HR Department (covid@mbl.edu) and inform them that you are still symptomatic but have received two negative COVID-19 rapid antigen tests. MBL HR will assist with scheduling a PCR test at a Falmouth urgent care and will provide you with additional information.
    • If the PCR test is negative, please provide this information to covid@mbl.edu and then you may reintegrate with the MBL activities. However, if you are feeling unwell you may want to continue resting until well enough to re-engage with activities. If the PCR test is positive, please contact the MBL HR (covid@mbl.edu) with this information and follow the steps for testing positive above.  HR will provide you with the next steps which may include isolation housing.  See the MBL’s COVID Positive Protocol for the required procedures once an individual tests positive for COVID-19.
  1. Requirements to Re-Engaging with Campus Activities After Testing COVID Positive:
    • If you test positive and are asymptomatic, then you must refrain from all campus activities from the date of the positive test (Day 0) through at least Day 5.
      • On Days 6 through 10 you must take a rapid antigen test and receive a negative result to re-engage with campus activities and must be masked at all times on campus through Day 10.
    • Email Human Resources at covid@mbl.edu with the results of your rapid tests until you re-engage.
